Junior ECOSOC

The Security Council is one of the oldest and most crucial organs of the United Nations (UN), as it was established on October 24, 1945. Its headquarters is located in New York City and it is composed of 15 members: five permanent members (P5) and ten non-permanent members, who are elected for a 2-year term during the UN General Assembly. The P5, United States, Russia, China, France and the United Kingdom, are the most powerful delegations within the Security Council, as they have the veto power. A veto power is when a delegation is allowed to block any resolution, regardless of the number of votes in favor. However, to use the veto, delegates must identify a clause that contradicts the UN charter. The UN charter is a document that establishes the structure and principles of the UN. It is important to outline that during the conference, chairs may challenge the use of veto power if the delegate’s reasoning is deemed invalid. Moreover, the Security Council is responsible to address important issues that threaten global stability and security, such as wars or any act of aggression that violates international law. Therefore, its major goal is to establish effective and binding resolutions that compromise worldwide stability and peace. Furthermore, it is one of the most powerful and important organs of the UN, with the authority to impose military sanctions in a country’s territory, when necessary

Hello everyone, my name is Cecilia Magalhaes, and I’m a freshman at EARJ Barra. I am incredibly honored and excited to serve as your chair for this edition of RioMUN! I began my MUN journey three years ago, feeling nervous and anxious about public speaking. Since then, I have built a huge passion for debate, and couldn't be more excited to chair for the first time and see this passion in other delegates. As a chair, my goal is to create a respectful and collaborative space where every delegate feels empowered and motivated to speak up and participate in the debate. I hope to give the best experience for all delegates, whether it is their first time or not, and help them in any way possible. Hello Delegates,

My name is Gabin, I am a junior in EARJ Gavea. I am thrilled to be chairing the junior ECOSOC committee; it is my first time doing so, although I have been involved with MUN for far longer. I started attending MUN conferences in another country, the United Arab Emirates, where I was poorly taught how they would be conducted, I did not understand any of the procedures. I joined a committee with nearly 200 people; I was extremely nervous, I only spoke about four times during the whole conference, without ever understanding what was going on. I left the closing day committee session completely overwhelmed, convinced I would never participate again. Yet as I reached Brazil, my parents convinced me to join the MUN club once more. I decided to join it with an open mind and quickly learned that serving on another committee was worth my time. I was pleasantly surprised by how supportive everyone was; I spent my first MUN in Brazil understanding the procedures, I learned how fun conferences really could be for the first time. Over the past two years, I have quickly expanded my expertise through these conferences, attending multiple panels in Brazil and even in the UK. Beyond MUN, I spend my time playing sports, such as volleyball, swimming, and martial arts, traveling with my family, and going out with friends. I am eager to meet all of you, and I will do my best to offer as much support as I did when I reached Brazil. Head-Chair, Luiza Fernandes

Hi everyone! My name is Luiza, I am a junior at The British School Urca and I will be serving as Head Chair for the Junior Economic and Social Council at RioMUN VI! Something that few know about me is that I was actually born in São Paulo, despite moving to Rio when I was one month old, and consider myself a true Carioca. I was federated in tênis for years and it remains one of my great passions, alongside reading, writing, sports in general, and, of course, MUN. My favorite subjects are English and Maths, and I am known to be quite competitive. I am beyond excited to be chairing for the Junior ECOSOC Council, especially given my strong interest in economics and my desire to pursue it in the future.
