Security Council

The United Nations Security Council (UNSC), is one of the six main organs of the United Nations General Assembly. It was established on the 24th of October, 1946, with a mission of maintaining international peace and security of nations on a global scale, in accordance with the UN charter. This committee consists of 15 delegations, five of them being permanent members, the P5, composed of the United States, China, Russia, United Kingdom and France. These nations hold the power to veto resolutions that they deem unfit and believe violates an article in the UN charter, furthermore, if applied, the resolution will not pass regardless of a majority vote.

The Security Council will deal with topics regarding worldwide security, tackling issues such as civil wars, terrorism and arms proliferation. Moreover, peaceful negotiations are always the objective in resolutions especially since decisions made in the Security Council have an impact on countries in a global range, e territorially, culturally and socially.

Co-Chair, Lorenzo Pimentel

Hi delegates! My name is Lorenzo Pimentel, and I’m a junior at TBSRJ Urca. I’m really excited to be one of your Security Council chairs for RioMUN VI!

I grew up in London and moved back to Rio a couple of years ago, and since then I’ve become really involved in MUN and other projects at school. What I enjoy most about MUN is how it forces you to think on the spot, defend positions you might not personally agree with, and actually negotiate with the people around you rather than just giving prepared speeches.

Outside of MUN, I’m the founder of ALMA, a student-led organisation supporting children undergoing cancer treatment and their families. I’m also involved in organising different projects and events at school, and I’m particularly interested in economics, technology, entrepreneurship and international affairs.

As your chair, I want Security Council to have strong and challenging debate, but I also want everyone to feel comfortable getting involved. Whether this is your first MUN or you’ve done several conferences before, don’t be afraid to speak, make mistakes, challenge other delegates and take risks. I’m looking forward to meeting all of you and hopefully making this a committee you’ll remember!

Hello delegates!

My name is Arthur and it is an honor serving as a co-chair for security council. I’m now a junior and have been doing MUN for over 3 years now and I’ve truly think I’ve found a passion for MUN. My main role in this conference is to push you forward into doing your best, growing your interest in political sciences, and making lasting friendships. Hiii, everyone!

My name is Gabriella Ribenboim, I’m a Junior at TBSRJ Urca, and it's with great pleasure that I'll be serving as the Head Chair for the Security Council in this year’s TBSRJMUN. These past years, I fell in love with MUN and the skills it gives you for life, as it is not only a great way of meeting extraordinary people, but also improving your public speaking and confidence. Outside this world of debating, I love binge-watching TV shows, but you can also find me eating out with my friends.
